Water Sports in Nice: Paddleboard, Kayak, Diving & Parasailing
In Nice, the watersports bases on the beaches along the Promenade des Anglais offer paddleboarding, kayaking, parasailing, waterskiing and towed inflatables in season. Scuba diving leaves from the port with supervised clubs. For a wilder outing, the rocky coves east of Nice, toward Villefranche and Beaulieu, are more rewarding than the Baie des Anges.
The Baie des Anges is wide open, with no islands or coves: it's best suited to thrill rides and board sports. The rocky seabed and little inlets begin east of the port. Here's how to choose, depending on what you're after.
Paddleboarding and kayaking along the Promenade
Several watersports bases on the Promenade des Anglais rent stand-up paddleboards and kayaks by the hour in season — for example Riviera Nautic Sport or Nikaïa Water Sport, both listed by the tourist office . The tourist office also lists clubs such as the Club de la Mer, which runs kayak outings, including sunset paddles.
A few tips:
- Go in the morning: the sea is usually calmer before the afternoon sea breeze picks up.
- Stay close to shore if you're a beginner, but outside the buoyed swimming zones, which craft must not cross.
- Life vest, water, hat: even for an hour, the sun reflects intensely off the water.
Renting on your own in front of the pebble beaches, the scenery stays very much urban. To paddle past cliffs and coves, you need to head east — or go with a guide who knows the spots.
Diving and snorkeling: the rocky seabed east of the port
The sand-and-pebble seabed off the Promenade is fairly barren. Underwater life is found instead on the rocky bottoms that begin east of Port Lympia, toward the Cap de Nice, Villefranche and Cap Ferrat.
Diving with a club
Several dive clubs are based in Nice, mostly around the port; the tourist office mentions, for example, the Centre International de Plongée de Nice and Chango Diving. They offer try dives and guided dives for certified divers . For a try dive, you may be asked for a medical certificate or a health questionnaire.
Snorkeling on your own
With just a mask and snorkel, Coco Beach, east of the port, is the easiest spot to reach: flat rocks, ladders into the water and often crystal-clear water. Be careful when there's a swell, swim with others, and locate the lifeguard station that's marked in summer . Our guide to the beaches of Nice explains how to get to Coco Beach and Rauba Capeù.
Thrills: parasailing, waterskiing, towed inflatables
This is the big specialty of the bases along the Promenade des Anglais. According to the tourist office, bases such as Nikaïa Water Sport and Riviera Nautic Sport offer parasailing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, flyboarding and towed inflatables. Parasailing usually takes off from a boat or the beach and gives you a bird's-eye view of the Baie des Anges and Castle Hill.
Prices, minimum weight and minimum age depend on the operator . Book the day before in midsummer, and pick a windless morning.
Jet skis and boats: what you need to know
You'll find jet skis and boat rentals in Nice and the neighboring ports (Saint-Laurent-du-Var, Villefranche, Beaulieu). Without a boat license, jet skiing is generally done as a guided ride led by an instructor . If you have a license, ask which areas are permitted.
The 300-meter rule
Within the 300-meter strip (about 1,000 ft) from the shore, the speed of registered vessels and craft is capped at 5 knots, even where there are no buoys, under the rules of the Mediterranean maritime prefecture. Motorized craft must use the buoyed channels to reach or leave the shore, and swimming zones are off-limits to them. Local bylaws vary from town to town: ask the rental company.
