Things to Do in Théoule-sur-Mer

In short

People come to Théoule-sur-Mer for the sea and the Esterel: a walk out to the Pointe de l'Aiguille, a swim at one of the eight public beaches, snorkeling on the underwater trail in summer, then a hike along the red-rock ridges. The village is easy to reach by train or bus from Cannes.

Squeezed between the Bay of Cannes and the red cliffs of the Esterel, Théoule-sur-Mer is the first town you pass through after leaving Mandelieu along the Corniche d'Or. The village itself is small, but the municipality stretches for several kilometers of coastline, all the way to Miramar and Le Trayas. Here's how to make the most of it over a day or a weekend.

Walk out to the Pointe de l'Aiguille

This is the easiest and most beautiful outing from the village. From the Tourist Office (2 boulevard de la Corniche d'Or), cross the Esplanade du Général de Gaulle and follow the seafront promenade: Aiguille beach is about 800 meters away on foot.

The headland is part of the Pointe de l'Aiguille departmental nature park, managed by the Alpes-Maritimes Department. The Aiguille loop trail is listed at roughly 1 hr 30, 2.5 km and 160 m of elevation gain: garnet-red cliffs, a small pebble beach, the Gardanne cave and, on clear days, views of the Mercantour peaks. It's a family-friendly outing, as long as you wear proper shoes, since the path is rocky in places.

Our tip: in summer, set off early in the morning, when the low-angled light brings out the red of the rock and the coves are still quiet.

Pick your beach

The town lists eight public beaches, from the center to the Miramar district:

  • Plage du Château and Plage du Suveret, on either side of Théoule harbor (Magellan parking lot, Promenade de la Darse);
  • Plage Maurin, opposite the train station on avenue de Lérins: the most convenient if you're coming by train;
  • Plage du Vallon de l'Autel and Plage du Vallon de l'Autel Nord, opposite the Tourist Office;
  • Plage de la Petite Fontaine (about 500 m on foot from the Tourist Office) and Plage de l'Aiguille (about 800 m);
  • Plage de la Figueirette, in Miramar, about 6 km from the center along the Corniche d'Or, just past the entrance to the Figueirette harbor.

There are also private beaches with restaurants, mostly around the château, as well as a beach accessible to people with reduced mobility: the full list and services are on the Tourist Office website .

Get your head underwater

The seabed off Théoule is protected by the Esterel-Théoule Departmental Marine Park, a marine area of about 353 hectares that extends the Esterel and Pointe de l'Aiguille nature parks out to sea. It protects, among other things, the seagrass meadows of Posidonia.

At the Pointe de l'Aiguille, the Department and the town have set up an underwater trail: a route marked out by buoys, with submerged panels explaining what you're looking at. It's in place during the summer season, usually from mid-June to mid-September , and waterproof guide cards can be borrowed from the Tourist Office. A mask, snorkel and fins are all you need; stay within the marked area and don't stand on the seagrass.

Head up into the Esterel

Théoule is one of the gateways to the Esterel Massif on the Alpes-Maritimes side. From the harbor, the Rocher des Monges hike (about 2 hr 30, 5.9 km, 300 m of elevation gain) offers views over the Pre-Alps and the statue of Notre-Dame d'Afrique. More experienced hikers set off from the Vallon de l'Autel parking lot toward the Crête des Grues or the Dent de l'Ours.

Be aware: from roughly mid-June to mid-September, access to the massifs may be discouraged or banned depending on the wildfire risk. We cover the routes and rules in our guide to hiking in the Esterel Massif.

Make a detour to the Château de la Napoule

Just before Théoule, on the Mandelieu-la-Napoule side, the Château de la Napoule rises at the water's edge. Restored in the 20th century by the American artist couple Henry and Marie Clews, it can be visited along with its gardens, often on a guided tour . Good news if you're on foot: Mandelieu-La Napoule train station is right opposite the entrance.

Getting there and around without a car

  • By train: TER regional trains on the Nice – Cannes – Saint-Raphaël line stop at Théoule-sur-Mer station . Le Trayas also has a stop.
  • By bus: line 22 links Cannes, central Théoule and Le Trayas; line 19 links Le Trayas, Théoule and the Mandelieu bus station .
  • Free shuttle: the town runs a year-round shuttle between Place de la Mairie and La Figueirette / Le Trayas, with a break at lunchtime .
  • By boat: in summer, a shuttle boat links Cannes' Old Port with Théoule and La Figueirette .

By car, take the A8 (exit Mandelieu-la-Napoule), then the coast road. In summer, the parking lots near the beaches fill up fast: the train remains the most relaxed option.

Frequently asked questions

Is Théoule-sur-Mer worth a trip from Cannes?

Yes, especially if you're looking for a wilder coastline than the Croisette. The TER train ride is short, and the Pointe de l'Aiguille is within walking distance of the center.

Which beach is easiest to reach without a car?

Plage Maurin, opposite the station, and the central beaches (Château, Suveret) are just a few minutes' walk from the train and buses.

Can you go snorkeling in Théoule?

Yes. The underwater trail at the Pointe de l'Aiguille is marked out in summer, within the Esterel-Théoule Departmental Marine Park. Ask for the waterproof guide card at the Tourist Office.

Can you hike in the Esterel in midsummer?

It depends on the day. Access to the massifs is regulated according to the wildfire risk: check the prefecture's map the evening before you set off.
