Best Sunset Spots in Juan-les-Pins & Cap d'Antibes
The best sunsets are from Juan-les-Pins beach (Square Gould or Boulevard du Littoral), from Pointe du Croûton on the Cap d'Antibes side, and from the Garoupe plateau for a panoramic view. The bay of Juan faces west: the Esterel and the Lérins Islands make up the horizon.
In Juan-les-Pins, the sun sinks toward the Esterel on the far side of the water. The bay opens to the west and southwest, and that's what makes its evenings so photogenic.
Why Juan-les-Pins looks out on the Esterel
From Juan beach, the Esterel Massif fills the southwestern horizon, behind the Lérins Islands and the bay of Cannes. But the sun doesn't always set in the same place:
- From October to February, it sets in the southwest, roughly in line with the Esterel: this is the season when the sun disappears behind the red rocks.
- Around the equinoxes (March and September), it sets due west, over the Cannes coastline.
- In summer, it sets further northwest, behind the hills of Golfe-Juan and Vallauris. Lit from the side, the Esterel then glows in intense reds and pinks.
These pointers are approximate, based on the sun's position; check the exact time and azimuth on a sunrise/sunset calculator.
On Juan-les-Pins beach
Square Gould and the pine grove
The easiest option: the public beach at Square Gould, at the foot of the pine grove (the Pinède Gould). You're two minutes from the café terraces, and the view sweeps across the whole bay to the Esterel. In summer the place buzzes late into the night, and on Jazz à Juan evenings (July), music from the pine grove provides the soundtrack to the sunset.
Boulevard du Littoral, toward Golfe-Juan
For more peace and quiet, walk west along Boulevard Charles-Guillaumont and then Boulevard du Littoral. The public beaches around the Lutetia area are less crowded in the evening, and you can sit on the sand facing the Lérins Islands.
Private beaches
Several of the bay's private beach clubs make a feature of their sunset views for drinks or dinner. Book ahead in summer and check serving hours .
Pointe du Croûton and the west side of the Cap
Follow Boulevard du Maréchal-Juin south from Port Gallice and you'll reach Pointe du Croûton, with its little harbor and the Crouton and Ondes beaches. No more casino or terraces here: just flat rocks, fishing boats and the entire bay of Juan in front of you, with the Esterel in the background.
This is our favorite spot for a quiet sunset. Sit on the rocks (careful, they're slippery near the water) and bring a light sweater: the breeze often picks up once the sun has gone down.
Getting there: allow about 20 to 25 minutes on foot from the Gould pine grove [durée indicative]. The Pointe du Croûton parking lot has only 47 spaces, paid in July and August, so it's better to come on foot or by bike.
The Garoupe plateau: a 360-degree view
At the top of Cap d'Antibes, the Garoupe plateau offers the widest panorama of all: Antibes, Juan-les-Pins, the Esterel and, on a clear day, the mountains of the hinterland. A viewpoint indicator lets you name each peak.
You can drive up via the Route du Phare (paid parking on site), or walk up the Chemin du Calvaire, a stone-paved path that starts near La Salis beach (about 100 meters of elevation gain, moderate difficulty, walking shoes recommended). The full loop suggested by the tourist office takes about two hours.
Good to know:
- The Garoupe chapel closes in the late afternoon (5:30 pm according to the tourist office), and the lighthouse, open to visitors since 2024, has seasonal hours . At sunset you'll be enjoying the plateau, not the monuments.
- Bring a headlamp if you're walking back down the Chemin du Calvaire after dark.
Sunset times and practical tips
As a rough guide, the sun sets in Juan-les-Pins at around 9:15 pm at the summer solstice, around 7:30 pm in late September and around 5 pm in late December .
- Arrive 30 minutes early: the best colors on the Esterel often appear just before and just after sunset.
- After sunset, stay another ten minutes: the sky above the Esterel keeps changing color.
- Ideal sky: a few high clouds. A sky swept clean by the mistral gives exceptional visibility over the mountains.
- For sunrise, head to the east side of the Cap, for example La Garoupe beach, which faces the open sea.
