When Is the Best Time to Kayak on the French Riviera?

In short

The best time to kayak on the French Riviera is June to September, when the water is usually above 21°C. September is often the ideal month: warm sea, fewer people, soft light. Whatever the season, head out in the morning before the breeze picks up, and check the marine forecast the day before.

You can paddle on the French Riviera almost all year round, but a great outing comes down to three things: water temperature, wind and start time. Here's how to pick the right moment, whether you're heading for Cap d'Antibes, the Lérins Islands, the Esterel or the Bay of Beaulieu.

The season, month by month

April and May: spring, for experienced paddlers

The coast is quiet and the light is gorgeous, but the water stays cool until late spring. In a kayak you're bound to get a bit wet: bring suitable gear.

June: the best all-round choice

The water often reaches 21 to 22°C, the days are the longest of the year, and the August crowds haven't arrived yet. It's an excellent month for a first outing.

July and August: peak season

The water is at its warmest: the August average is around 24 to 25°C in Nice, and marine heatwaves can push it higher. It's the perfect time to combine kayaking, swimming and snorkeling. On the flip side, beaches and anchorages are busy, the sun is fierce from 11am, and jellyfish blooms are more frequent.

September: the locals' favorite month

The sea has soaked up the summer heat (an average of over 23°C in Nice in September 2025), tourists thin out and the light turns golden. If you have the choice, this is the month to aim for.

October: the shoulder season

The water often stays around 20 to 21°C in October (21.3°C on average in Nice in October 2025), but the days get shorter and Mediterranean rainstorms become more frequent. A good option if the weather cooperates.

November to March

The water drops below 18°C . Kayaking is still possible for well-equipped paddlers .

Water temperature at a glance

Published readings for Nice give a good idea for the French Riviera as a whole. In 2025, the monthly average was about 21.2°C in June, 24.2°C in July, 24.3°C in August, 23.1°C in September and 21.3°C in October. These figures vary from year to year and from cove to cove; check the day's readings before you go.

The wind: mistral, east wind and sea breeze

The mistral

The mistral is a dry, often violent northwesterly wind that blows down the Rhône valley. Where it hits depends on the weather situation: Provence and the Var coast are highly exposed, while the eastern French Riviera is more often sheltered by the mountains. When it does reach the Cannes or Nice area, it generally arrives from the west. As an offshore wind, it pushes boats out to sea: dangerous in a kayak, even if the water looks flat near the shore.

The east wind

Less well known to visitors, the east wind often comes with worsening weather. It whips up a choppy sea on east-facing coasts, such as the Bay of Cannes or some Esterel beaches. On an east-wind day, stick to sheltered waters or postpone your outing.

The sea breeze

On fine summer days, the sea is often calmer in the morning. As the land heats up, it creates a sea breeze that usually strengthens in the early afternoon before dying down in the evening. That's why most kayak trips set off in the morning.

The best times of day to paddle

  • The morning, from first departures until late morning: flatter water, low-angled light on the cliffs, fewer boats, bearable heat.
  • Late afternoon, once the breeze has dropped: beautiful light, but leave yourself a margin before sunset.
  • Avoid the middle of the day in summer, both for the sun and for the breeze.

Jellyfish

The most common species on the French Riviera is the mauve stinger (Pelagia noctiluca), a small purple jellyfish whose sting causes burning and itching. Its arrivals are irregular and very localized: one beach can be affected in the morning and clear in the afternoon, depending on winds and currents. Crowd-sourced sighting maps are updated throughout the summer.

If you get stung:

  • get out of the water and rinse with seawater, never fresh water;
  • don't rub; remove the tentacles with a rigid card or tweezers;
  • forget urine, it doesn't work;
  • see a doctor if the pain persists, and call 15 or 112 in case of major swelling, difficulty breathing or a sting to the face.

Which tour to choose depending on conditions?

Azurkay's four areas don't all face the same way. Cap d'Antibes (€75, departing from Plage du Crouton) combines snorkeling and cliff jumping; the Lérins Islands are reached from Cannes across the channel; the Esterel Massif tour follows the red rocks from Théoule-sur-Mer; and Beaulieu-sur-Mer explores the coastline of Beaulieu and Cap Ferrat. On windy days, one area can be rough while another stays calm: ask about conditions and about the rescheduling policy in case of bad weather .

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to kayak on the French Riviera?

September, for many paddlers: the water is still very warm, the crowds thin out and conditions are often settled. June is an excellent second choice.

Can you kayak when the mistral is blowing?

It's not recommended. The mistral is an offshore wind that pushes boats away from the shore. Postpone your outing or choose a genuinely sheltered area, with a guide.

What time should you go kayaking in summer?

In the morning. The sea is generally calmer before the sea breeze picks up, and the heat is still bearable.

Are jellyfish a problem when kayaking?

Less so than when swimming. Before a snorkeling stop, just take a quick look around the kayak.
