Water Activities in Fréjus: Kayak, SUP, Diving & Kitesurf
In Fréjus you can rent a sea kayak or paddleboard at the Marc-Modena municipal watersports center or paddle the Argens River, dive with the clubs at Port-Fréjus, kitesurf and windsurf toward Saint-Aygulf, and snorkel in the little rocky coves. For sea kayaking beneath truly dramatic cliffs, the Esterel Massif is about 30 km (under 20 miles) away.
With its long, wind-exposed beaches, its marina and the mouth of the Argens River, Fréjus is a surprisingly varied playground for water sports. Here's what you can do, where to do it, and what to watch out for.
Sea kayaking and paddleboarding: the Marc-Modena watersports center
The Marc-Modena municipal watersports center sits right on the beach in the heart of Fréjus-Plage (910, boulevard d'Alger). It offers rentals and private lessons in windsurfing, Optimist dinghies, stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking, with different rates for residents and visitors . It's also a place to learn to sail.
Good to know: opening days and hours change with the seasons, with weekday opening in spring and fall . Book ahead in summer.
Tip: go out in the morning. On this open stretch of coast the wind often picks up as the day goes on, which makes paddling back to shore hard work.
Kayaking, canoeing and SUP on the Argens River
For a gentler outing, you can paddle down the Argens River by canoe, kayak or SUP. The outfitter Kayak Paddle Fréjus, on chemin de la Sablière, rents all three for the river, along with giant paddleboards and electric boats . The flat water makes it a great choice for beginners and families, and the riverbanks offer some welcome shade.
Good to know: life jackets are mandatory on canoe and kayak trips.
Scuba diving and snorkel tours from Port-Fréjus
Port-Fréjus is home to several dive centers, including the Centre International de Plongée de Fréjus, based in the marina since 1988, and Port-Fréjus Plongée, an FFESSM-accredited club and PADI center. They offer try dives, certification courses, guided snorkel trips and freediving .
The area is known for its wrecks, which have become havens for marine life, and for beginner-friendly offshore sites such as the Lion de Mer and the Île d'Or, toward Saint-Raphaël. Exploring the wrecks requires a dive certification and a medical certificate .
Kitesurfing, windsurfing and wing foiling
Fréjus is one of the windiest spots in the Var.
- The mouth of the Argens, next to the Base Nature: kitesurfing is allowed in the zones where swimming is prohibited, as marked by buoys.
- The main beach at Saint-Aygulf: exposed to the wind and hugely popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers.
- Esclamandes beach: one of its four zones is reserved for kitesurfing.
Local schools offer lessons and rentals . Don't head out alone without training: sharing the water with swimmers is strictly regulated.
Snorkeling in the coves of Saint-Aygulf
You don't need a boat to get your face in the water: from the Saint-Aygulf coastal path (the old customs officers' trail), the little coves — Grand Boucharel, Four à Chaux, Corailleurs and others — reveal seagrass meadows, sea urchins, sea cucumbers and rockfish. Motorized watercraft are banned within the 300 m coastal strip here, and boats must slow to a crawl.
Tips: wear water shoes, tow a marker buoy if you swim away from the shore, and never snorkel alone. For the best coves, see our guide to the most beautiful beaches in Fréjus.
Safety and good practice
- Check the marine forecast before every outing. The Fréjus coastline is exposed, and the sea can build quickly.
- Use the buoyed channels to launch from and return to the beach with any craft.
- Don't trample the seagrass and don't take anything from the coves, where protected plants grow.
- Protect yourself from the sun: the glare off the water is intense, even on hazy days.
- Pick the right season: the water is most pleasant from June to October. Our article on when to go kayaking on the French Riviera breaks down the pros of each season.
