Things to Do in Fréjus with Kids: A Family Guide
With kids, your best bets are the Base Nature François-Léotard (lifeguarded beach, playgrounds, trampolines, free entry), canoeing or paddleboarding on the Argens river, and the Roman amphitheater. In summer, Aqualand and Luna Park round out the program. Note: the Fréjus zoo closed for good at the end of August 2026.
Fréjus is an easy destination for families: plenty of sand, green spaces by the water and outings that little legs can manage. Here are our ideas, grouped by type of outing, with what works best in each season.
Base Nature François-Léotard: the ideal playground
If you only remember one address, make it this one: 1196, boulevard de la Mer. This large, free public park on the seafront has everything you need for a full day out:
- a long sandy beach, lifeguarded in summer and certified "Handiplage" (accessible for visitors with disabilities);
- children's playgrounds, trampolines and picnic areas;
- a skatepark, a BMX track, beach volleyball and four orienteering courses for older kids;
- a Mediterranean garden and Natura 2000 protected natural areas at the mouth of the Argens.
Practical info: the park is open daily from 7:30am to 11pm (midnight in July and August), according to the tourist office . A snack bar operates for much of the year, but bringing your own picnic is still the easiest option. On-site parking.
Good to know: it's also the best option out of season, when the theme parks are closed.
Summer: Aqualand and Luna Park
Aqualand Fréjus
The water park, on the D559, has dedicated areas for younger children (Kidzworld, Minipark, Children's Paradise) as well as the big slides. In 2026, the season ran from June 20 to September 6. The park doesn't reopen until the following summer . Slides have minimum height requirements, usually around 1.10 m to 1.20 m depending on the ride: check before you promise anyone a go.
Luna Park
Right next to Aqualand, on the RN98, this summer funfair opens in the evening, from 8pm to 2am. In 2026, it ran from May 22 to August 29, with free entry and free parking (you only pay for the rides), and it has announced a return for 2027 . Perfect for an evening out with teenagers; with little ones, come right at opening time.
What about the zoo?
Many guides still list it, but the Fréjus zoo closed its doors to the public for good on August 30, 2026, after 55 years. Its roughly 450 animals were due to be moved to other parks in France and across Europe.
Gently on the water: canoeing and paddleboarding on the Argens
For a first paddling experience, the river is more reassuring than the sea: flat water, no waves, and shade along the banks. The rental outfit Kayak Paddle Fréjus, on chemin de la Sablière, offers canoes, kayaks, paddleboards (including giant boards for the whole family) and electric boats . Life jackets are mandatory.
For other water sports, see our article on water sports in Fréjus.
Nature for little explorers: the Villepey ponds
Between Fréjus and Saint-Aygulf, the Étangs de Villepey (Villepey ponds) form a protected area where more than 260 bird species have been recorded. An interpretive trail leads to an observation hide: bring binoculars and turn the walk into a spotting game. The migration seasons, in spring and late summer, are the best times to go. Park at the Esclamandes parking lot (paid in summer). Some sections are closed in the height of summer .
A bit of history, kid-friendly version
The amphitheater
The Arènes (Roman amphitheater), on rue Henri-Vadon, grab kids' attention right away: it's easy to picture the ancient shows that took place here. The visit is short, which suits younger children well . To go further, see Roman Fréjus: the ancient sites to visit.
Hông-Hiên Pagoda
With its Buddha statues, including a reclining Buddha, and its wooded grounds, this Buddhist pagoda feels like a trip to another world for kids and adults alike. Free entry, open daily from 9:30am to 6pm according to the tourist office . Pets are not allowed. It's a place of worship, so explain to the kids that people speak quietly here.
Our tips for a great day out
- Pacing: one outing in the morning, the beach or a nap during the hottest hours, and a second outing late in the day.
- Water and shade: the sandy beaches and Roman sites have little shade; a beach umbrella, water bottles and hats are essential.
- Getting around: the Base Nature, Aqualand and the pagoda are away from the town center. Without a car, look into the local bus lines .
- Out of season: focus on the Base Nature, the amphitheater, the pagoda and the Villepey ponds, which all stay open.

Kayaking with Azurkay
Once the kids have caught the paddling bug on the Argens, the sea is the next step. Our Esterel Massif kayak tour leaves from Théoule-sur-Mer, about 30 km from Fréjus , for 4 hours along the red rocks, in groups of no more than 16, led by state-certified instructors . A great outing to share with teens who are comfortable in the water.
