How to Get from Nice to Villefranche-sur-Mer Without a Car
The fastest option is the TER train: about 5 minutes on average from Nice-Ville to Villefranche-sur-Mer station, which sits right above Marinières beach. Lignes d'Azur bus 15 also runs from central Nice to Villefranche (Octroi stop), and keen walkers can reach the Darse harbor on the Cap de Nice coastal path in about 2 hours.
Villefranche-sur-Mer is the first town east of Nice, just a few kilometers from Port Lympia. In summer, leaving the car behind is almost always the smart move: the roads are busy, and parking is scarce and expensive. Here are your options, from the quickest to the most scenic.
By train: the fastest option
TER regional trains on the Nice – Monaco – Ventimiglia coastal line stop at Villefranche-sur-Mer station, close to the center and just above Marinières beach.
- Departure stations in Nice: Nice-Ville (the main station) or Nice-Riquier, closer to the port.
- Journey time: about 5 minutes on average, according to SNCF TER.
- Frequency: there are plenty of trains during the day, but service hours and frequency vary depending on the day and engineering works .
- Tickets: buy before boarding, at the station or in the app .
Once you arrive: from the station, walk down to the Marinières promenade; the old town and the Port de la Santé are about ten minutes away on foot along the waterfront.
Good to know: the same train continues to Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Èze, Monaco and Menton — handy if you want to string several villages together in one day.
By bus: lines 15 and 600
Line 15 (Lignes d'Azur)
This is the city bus line linking Nice to Villefranche and on to Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.
- Departure in Nice: Lycée Masséna stop (city center) or Port Lympia / Arson (the port).
- Stop in Villefranche: Octroi, at the entrance to town, from where you walk down to the harbor and the beach.
- Terminus: Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat (toward Port de Saint-Jean).
- Journey time and frequency: allow around fifteen minutes depending on traffic .
Line 600
Line 600 runs from the port of Nice (Arson Fodéré stop) to Monaco, stopping at Villefranche-sur-Mer (Octroi). It's useful if you plan to carry on to Beaulieu, Èze or Monaco .
From Nice Côte d'Azur Airport
The airport is about 14 km (9 miles) away. Without a car, the tourist office recommends taking tram line 2 to Port Lympia, then bus 15 from the Port Lympia / Arson stop. Alternatively, head to Nice-Ville station and take the TER.
On foot: the Cap de Nice coastal path
This is the most beautiful way to arrive in Villefranche, and one of the loveliest coastal walks around Nice.
- Start: Jardin Félix-Rainaud, just past La Réserve restaurant, east of the port of Nice, above Coco Beach.
- Finish: the Lazaret neighborhood, then the Darse harbor at the foot of Villefranche's citadel.
- Distance and time: about 6 km (3.7 miles); allow 2 hours one way.
- Difficulty: moderate, mainly because of the stairs.
The route
The path wraps around the Cap de Nice at the water's edge, skirting private estates and the Palais Maeterlinck. A long flight of steps then climbs up to the Basse Corniche, which you follow for about 800 meters (boulevard Maeterlinck) before picking up the path again on your right. You then pass the restored blockhouse at the Pointe des Sans-Culottes, with ever-wider views over the bay and Cap Ferrat, before reaching the Paganini tower in the Lazaret.
Our tips
- Start early: much of the route is in full sun.
- Footwear: sneakers with good grip, not flip-flops. Some of the steps are cut into the rock.
- Water: there's no guaranteed water point on the path. Bring at least a liter (a quart) per person.
- Rough seas: in strong wind or heavy swell, some low-lying sections may be closed or dangerous .
- Getting back: walk there and take the train home from Villefranche station, a few minutes from the Darse harbor along the seafront.
By taxi or car
Taxi: Villefranche's taxi stand is on place Amélie-Pollonnais. From Nice, the ride takes just a few minutes outside rush hour .
Car: you can reach Villefranche via the Basse Corniche or the Moyenne Corniche, or from the A8 highway, exit 55 Nice-Est. Parking in town is paid and limited, especially in summer .
