Kayaking & Paddleboarding in Villefranche Bay: Where to Go

Kayaking & Paddleboarding in Villefranche Bay: Where to Go

In short

The easiest place to launch in Villefranche Bay is Marinières beach, where a stand-up paddleboard rental sets up in season (roughly May to late September). From there you follow the waterfront toward the Port de la Santé, the citadel and the Darse harbor, staying close to shore — ideally in the morning, when the sea is at its calmest.

Tucked between Cap de Nice and Cap Ferrat, Villefranche Bay is a naturally sheltered stretch of water that sailors have prized since antiquity. It's famous for its depth, which reaches around 95 meters (310 ft) at the mouth. For kayakers and paddleboarders, that means deep-blue water — but also boat traffic you need to keep an eye on.

Why paddle in Villefranche Bay

From the water, Villefranche looks like a painting: ocher and yellow facades stacked above the Port de la Santé, the bulk of the Saint-Elme citadel, then the vaulted arches of the Darse harbor. Across the bay, the villas of Cap Ferrat tumble down to the rocks. Because it's so sheltered, the bay is beginner-friendly in calm weather.

One thing to keep in mind: the bay is an anchorage. Sailboats, yachts and, on some days, cruise ships drop anchor here, with tenders shuttling passengers to the quay. Always stay close to shore and well away from areas where boats are maneuvering.

Where to rent a paddleboard or kayak

Marinières beach

This is the most visible rental spot. A stand-up paddleboard rental listed by Côte d'Azur France Tourisme offers, right on the beach:

  • single and tandem paddleboards;
  • rentals by the half hour or the hour;
  • dogs welcome on board, with a harness or life vest available for your pet.

According to its listing, it's open daily from 10am to 7pm, from early May to early October . A deposit may be required, and the listed payment methods are cash and check.

Kayaks

Kayak rentals in Villefranche itself are less well documented: some beach clubs offer them now and then . If what you really want is a guided outing with an instructor, you're better off booking a guided tour in a neighboring town.

Suggested route from Marinières beach

From the beach, an easy loop of about an hour covers the highlights:

  1. Head west along the waterfront, staying outside the buoyed swimming zone.
  2. Paddle past the Port de la Santé and the Chapelle Saint-Pierre decorated by Cocteau, keeping your distance from the harbor entrance and the tenders.
  3. Follow the citadel ramparts, which are seriously impressive from below.
  4. Approach the Darse harbor, a former naval port now used by pleasure boats and fishermen — without going inside.
  5. Head back the same way, ideally before the breeze picks up.

Experienced paddlers may be tempted to cross the bay to Cap Ferrat. That's an open-water crossing, exposed to wind and passing boats: only for experienced, well-equipped paddlers, and only on a glassy sea. To explore the Cap Ferrat coastline, a guided tour is the more relaxed option.

Safety and common sense

  • Life vest: wear a buoyancy aid, even when the sea is calm.
  • Weather: check the marine forecast before heading out. Even in a sheltered bay, a rising wind can quickly kick up a chop.
  • Swimming zones: they're buoyed in summer and off-limits to watercraft. Use the marked channels to get in and out.
  • Boats: a paddleboarder is hard to spot from a yacht's wheelhouse. Wear bright colors and never cut across a tender's path.
  • Sun and water: hat, sunscreen, water bottle. The glare off the water is intense.

When to go

Mornings, from when the rentals open until late morning, usually bring the flattest sea and gorgeous light on the old town. The water often calms down again in the late afternoon. July and August are the busiest months; June and September still have warm water and a quieter bay. To compare the seasons, read our article on the best time to kayak on the French Riviera.
