Best Beaches in Villefranche-sur-Mer: Marinières, Darse & More

In short

Villefranche-sur-Mer has four main beaches: Les Marinières, the largest, over 700 meters long and lifeguarded in summer; La Darse, a small pebble beach below the old ramparts; L'Ange Gardien, which carries on from Les Marinières; and the low-key Plage des Deux Rups. All of them look out over the bay, facing Cap Ferrat.

The tourist office sums up the spirit of the place well: a seafront "to enjoy all year round," from Les Marinières to La Darse. You won't find wide, fine-sand beaches here, but gravel, pebbles and deep-blue water in a sheltered bay. Here's how to choose yours.

Plage des Marinières: the big family beach

This is Villefranche's main beach, below the train station and along the Promenade des Marinières. It stretches for over 700 meters of fine gravel, with a head-on view of the old town on one side and Cap Ferrat on the other.

Good to know

  • Lifeguards: a lifeguard station is staffed in season .
  • Jellyfish net: according to the regional tourism board, the beach is fitted with one .
  • Facilities: part of the beach is public and free; there's also a private beach club with a restaurant, and sunbed and umbrella rental.
  • Activities: it's the base for stand-up paddleboard rentals in season (see our article on kayaking and paddleboarding in Villefranche Bay).

Who's it for? Families, anyone arriving by train (the station is right next door) and those who want a lifeguarded beach.

Tip: in July and August, arrive before 10 a.m. to get a spot near the water. The gravel heats up fast, and water shoes make getting into the sea much more pleasant.

Plage de la Darse: the sheltered beach below the ramparts

West of town, on the other side of the citadel, Plage de la Darse is tucked beneath the old ramparts, next to the harbor of the same name. Smaller and pebbly, it offers an open view across the whole bay.

Good to know

  • Access: from Quai de la Darse or Chemin du Lazaret, via fairly steep steps. That makes it a poor fit for strollers and people with reduced mobility.
  • Facilities: limited, and lifeguard cover isn't guaranteed .
  • Vibe: calmer and more local than Les Marinières, especially on weekdays.

Who's it for? Couples, swimmers who like water that gets deep quickly, and those arriving on foot along the coastal path from Nice, which comes out right at La Darse.

Plage de l'Ange Gardien and Plage des Deux Rups

L'Ange Gardien

At the eastern end of Les Marinières, toward Cap Ferrat, Plage de l'Ange Gardien is smaller and often less crowded. It's good for swimming and water sports, but according to the tourist office listing, dogs aren't allowed. Official sources don't detail its facilities .

Les Deux Rups

The fourth beach listed by the tourist office, Plage des Deux Rups, is the most under-the-radar. Public information on access and facilities is scarce , so check with the tourist office before you go.

Nearby beaches: toward Cap Ferrat

Follow the bay east and you leave Villefranche for Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. The beaches of Passable and Les Fossettes, often associated with Villefranche, are actually in the town of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, on the western flank of the peninsula. To explore them, check out our guide to the beaches of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.

Practical beach tips for Villefranche

  • Come without a car: parking near the beaches is paid and fills up quickly in summer. The TER train from Nice drops you a few minutes' walk from Les Marinières.
  • Water shoes: useful everywhere, essential at La Darse.
  • Shade: scarce on the public beaches. An umbrella or hat is a must in summer.
  • Water: bring a bottle, especially for La Darse, which is a walk from the shops.
  • Jellyfish and water quality: check the signs at beach entrances, updated during the season.
  • Dogs: rules vary by beach and season .
